Program Overview: Mechatronic Systems Engineering at UWindsor
The Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE) program at the University of Windsor is a new undergraduate program launched in Fall 2025 that leverages machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision techniques to enhance mechatronics system performance. This innovative program sits at the convergence of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, providing you with interdisciplinary skills essential for designing and operating advanced technologies.
The MSE program offers two high-demand areas of specialization: Autonomous Vehicles and Intelligent Manufacturing. These specializations equip you with vital skills in automation, robotics, and intelligent systems, preparing you to lead in an increasingly technology-driven world where smart systems are reshaping every industry.
Graduates of the MSE program will possess a deep understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications, enabling them to contribute to advancing technology and tackling current and future engineering challenges. An optional co-op program is available, giving you the opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience during your studies.
Key Program Highlights
- Two in-demand specializations: Autonomous Vehicles and Intelligent Manufacturing
- Integration of AI, machine learning, and computer vision into mechatronic systems
- Optional co-op work program for real-world industry experience
- Housed within the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation featuring 80+ research labs
Curriculum and Course Modules
The MSE program follows a common first-year engineering curriculum before branching into specialized mechatronics coursework in subsequent years. The program integrates mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering disciplines, combining rigorous theoretical foundations with hands-on laboratory and project-based learning.
Covers visualization techniques, engineering graphics, CAD, descriptive geometry, and an overview of the engineering profession including ethics, sustainability, and technical communication skills.
A multi-semester sequence in calculus-based introductory physics with emphasis on mechanics, alongside advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations foundational to engineering analysis.
Introduces core electrical engineering principles, circuit analysis, sensor technologies, motor controls, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) essential for mechatronic system design.
Explores thermodynamics, materials science, mechanical design, and the analysis of mechanical systems including hydraulics and pneumatics used in complex mechatronic applications.
Focuses on machine learning algorithms, AI techniques, and computer vision methods applied to enhancing mechatronic system performance, autonomous navigation, and intelligent manufacturing processes.
