Program Overview: Mechanical Engineering Co-Op at UWindsor

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering with Co-Op at the University of Windsor prepares you to design, produce, and operate the mechanical systems that power modern industry. The program covers the two major pillars of mechanical engineering — solid mechanics and thermofluids — forming the foundation for careers in aerodynamics, energy production, manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace sectors.

Located in Windsor, Ontario, directly across from Detroit, Michigan, this program benefits from strong ties to Canada's automotive and manufacturing heartland. The Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation provides state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated industrial courtyard for hands-on project work and over 80 research labs.

The integrated co-op option allows you to gain paid, supervised work experience with leading employers, building professional networks and practical skills before graduation. Available specializations include automotive, aerospace, environmental, and materials engineering, enabling you to tailor your degree to your career goals.

Key Program Highlights

  • Integrated co-op work terms providing paid industry experience with employers in automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors
  • Specialization options in automotive, aerospace, environmental, and materials engineering
  • Access to the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation with 80+ research labs and an industrial courtyard
  • Strategic location near North America's busiest international border crossing, connecting Windsor and Detroit's industrial corridor

Curriculum and Course Modules

The Mechanical Engineering Co-Op curriculum begins with a common first year shared across all engineering programs, building a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering fundamentals. In subsequent years, you specialize in mechanical engineering topics spanning solid mechanics and thermofluids, culminating in a capstone design project and co-op work placements.

Engineering Fundamentals and Mathematics

First Year Core

Covers calculus, linear algebra, physics, chemistry, and introductory engineering design. This common first year establishes the mathematical and scientific foundation required for all engineering disciplines.

Solid Mechanics and Materials

Core Module

Explores mechanics of materials, stress analysis, and material properties. You will learn to analyze forces on mechanical parts and evaluate their performance within larger systems.

Thermofluids and Energy Systems

Core Module

Covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles. These courses form the basis for understanding energy production, HVAC systems, and aerodynamic design.

Machine Design and CAD

Core Module

Focuses on the design and analysis of mechanical components using computer-aided design tools. You will develop skills in precision engineering design and technical documentation.

Manufacturing and Industrial Processes

Core Module

Introduces manufacturing methods, quality control, and production systems. Topics include CNC machining, casting, forming, and modern manufacturing technologies.

Capstone Design Project

Final Year

A comprehensive senior design project that integrates knowledge from all program areas. You will work in teams to solve real-world engineering problems, often in collaboration with industry partners.
