Environmental Engineering at the University of Windsor

The University of Windsor offers the first environmental engineering degree program in Canada, providing a comprehensive education that covers air, water, solid waste, sustainability, and more. Students benefit from a strong, multidisciplinary curriculum that combines fundamental knowledge with state-of-the-art technology and co-op employment experience.

UWindsor is home to the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, giving students unique opportunities for collaboration between science and engineering. The program features a low faculty-to-student ratio, small class sizes, and hands-on learning experiences that prepare you for a successful career in environmental engineering.

Graduates of this program are trained not only to solve environmental problems of immediate concern but also to develop practices and processes that systematically prevent their occurrence. The program leads to eligibility for the Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation through Professional Engineers Ontario.

Program Highlights

  • First environmental engineering degree program in Canada with decades of leadership in the field
  • Access to the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research for interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Co-op program with three paid work terms providing industry experience over four calendar years
  • Pathway to Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation upon graduation and work experience

Curriculum and Course Structure

The Environmental Engineering program begins with a general first year shared across all engineering disciplines, giving you flexibility in program choice. In the second year, courses are shared with Civil Engineering, while the third and fourth years focus on core environmental engineering topics including pollution control, chemical analysis, ecology, and waste management.

Engineering Mechanics and Materials

Core - Year 1

Foundational courses covering engineering mechanics, materials science, and engineering design principles shared across all engineering disciplines in the general first year.

Environmental Chemical Analysis

Core - Year 2/3

Study of analytical methods used to measure physical, chemical, and biological contaminants in water, wastewater, air, and soil matrices using state-of-the-art laboratory instruments.

Air and Water Pollution Control

Core - Year 3

Core environmental courses covering the principles and technologies for controlling air and water pollution, including treatment processes and regulatory frameworks in Canada and the United States.

Materials Recovery and Waste Management

Core - Year 3

Examination of solid waste management systems, materials recovery techniques, recycling processes, and lifecycle analysis including novel areas such as vehicle recycling.

Sustainability in Engineering

Core - Year 3/4

Focuses on assessing the sustainability and environmental performance of engineering projects and systems, integrating environmentally conscious technologies and sustainable design practices.

Environmental Assessment and Capstone Project

Core - Year 4

Covers environmental impact assessment methodologies and culminates in a capstone engineering report that integrates knowledge from across the program into a comprehensive design project.
