Program Overview: Physical Geography and Oceanography BSc (Hons)

The Physical Geography and Oceanography BSc (Hons) at Bangor University provides research-led teaching covering both terrestrial processes such as rivers and glaciers, and marine processes including waves, tides, density currents, and sea level dynamics. This interdisciplinary program examines how water, sediment, and biogeochemical components move from land into the sea, giving you a thorough understanding of the land-ocean interface.

The course integrates these processes to examine the impacts of environmental change, climate variability, sea level rise, and pollution on the health and sustainability of terrestrial and marine environments. Bangor's location between the dramatic North Wales coastline, the Menai Strait, and the mountains of Snowdonia National Park provides an unrivalled natural laboratory for fieldwork and hands-on learning.

Placement Year and International Experience Year options are available, allowing you to gain professional work experience or study abroad at a partner institution as part of your degree. The Schools of Ocean Science and Environment, Natural Resources and Geography are well known in the marine and environmental science communities for their hands-on approach to teaching.

Key Program Highlights

  • Research-led teaching covering both terrestrial and marine processes at the land-ocean transition
  • Unique location between Snowdonia National Park, the Menai Strait, and the North Wales coastline for unparalleled fieldwork
  • Optional Placement Year and International Experience Year pathways to boost employability
  • Access to Bangor's research vessel and specialist marine science facilities for practical oceanographic training

Curriculum and Modules

The curriculum blends physical geography and oceanography across three years, progressing from foundational principles to advanced specialist topics and an independent research project. The course involves 25 to 35 hours per week of lectures, practicals, laboratory work, fieldwork, tutorials, and project work, with practical work and fieldwork forming major elements of the program.

Field Course: Making Snowdonia

20 credits

An immersive residential field course exploring the geological and geomorphological processes that have shaped the Snowdonia landscape, providing essential fieldwork skills and data collection techniques.

Marine Biogeochemistry

10 credits

Introduces the chemical and biological processes governing nutrient cycling, carbon transport, and biogeochemical fluxes in marine environments from estuaries to the open ocean.

Physical Oceanography

20 credits

Covers the fundamental physics of ocean circulation, including waves, tides, density-driven currents, thermohaline circulation, and sea level variability and their role in the climate system.

Geomorphology and Earth Surface Processes

20 credits

Examines the physical processes shaping the Earth's surface, including fluvial, glacial, and coastal geomorphology, weathering, erosion, and sediment transport mechanisms.

Coastal and Estuarine Processes

20 credits

Focuses on the dynamic processes occurring in coastal zones and estuaries, including sediment dynamics, tidal interactions, wave energy, and the impacts of human activity and climate change.

Research Project in Physical Geography or Oceanography

40 credits

A major independent research project in your final year, allowing you to investigate a topic of your choice under academic supervision, developing critical analysis, scientific writing, and research methodology skills.
