MMus Performance at Bangor University — Program Overview
The MMus Performance at Bangor University is designed for proficient instrumental or vocal performers who wish to refine their technical and interpretative skills while deepening their understanding of contemporary and historical performance contexts. You will develop pathways and methodologies to undertake specialist practice-based research, preparing you for further study at PhD level or a professional career in music.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of individual tuition and small-group seminars. You will receive 36 hours of specialist instrumental or vocal tuition with experienced pedagogues, alongside opportunities to participate in masterclasses and workshops with internationally renowned musicians.
The program benefits from strong partnerships with leading cultural organisations including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Sinfonia Cymru, and Pontio Arts Centre. Recitals take place in the university's acclaimed Powis Hall, which features a Steinway D Concert Grand piano and excellent acoustics.

Curriculum and Modules
The taught study element of the MMus Performance is delivered across two semesters, with the Master's Project completed over the summer. You will undertake solo performance modules in both semesters, each culminating in a recital accompanied by research-based assignments such as programme notes and oral presentations.
Solo Performance 1
20 creditsDevelop and refine your solo performance repertoire in semester one, culminating in a short recital. Research-based assignments include the preparation of professional programme notes.
Solo Performance 2
20 creditsContinue refining your performance skills in semester two with a second short recital. Accompanying research assignments include an oral presentation contextualising your repertoire choices.
Performance in Context
20 creditsDevelop a deeper understanding of how practice-based activities are directly informed by contextual disciplines, linking your performance to broader historical and theoretical frameworks.
Investigating Music
20 creditsA collaborative module bringing together students from musicology, composition, and performance programmes to explore a range of contemporary issues from different and inter-related perspectives.
Researching Music
20 creditsPrepare for your summer Master's Project by covering research methodologies, writing proposals, and project management skills essential for practice-based research.
Master's Project (Final Recital)
60 creditsPrepared over the summer, the Master's Project consists of a public recital lasting 50 to 60 minutes, or a lecture recital of around 40 minutes, normally given in late September or early October.

- Performance ProficiencyExcellent grade in an undergraduate final-year recital (good 2:i or higher), or a high mark in DipABRSM (or equivalent), or at least a pass at LRSM (or equivalent)
- Audition MaterialApplicants may be asked to submit a recent unedited video performance of approximately 30 minutes' duration
- Relevant ExperienceDemonstrated proficiency as an instrumental or vocal performer with evidence of public performance experience
- Personal StatementA statement outlining your artistic goals, performance background, and reasons for pursuing postgraduate study in performance
