The Music and Film BA (Hons) at Bangor University allows you to explore the many connections between these two creative disciplines from a range of perspectives. Studying Music and Film offers exciting opportunities to hone your skills in performance, filmmaking, writing, critical thinking, theorising, and debate. Film at Bangor combines historical, critical, and creative work and practice, while Music allows you to study culture, society, and history as well as composition and performance.
You will have access to extensive facilities including two professional standard concert halls, electroacoustic composition and recording studios, film editing suites, and the latest 4K digital filmmaking equipment. The program also offers optional Placement Year and International Experience Year pathways to further broaden your horizons.

Curriculum and Modules
The Music and Film BA (Hons) curriculum is designed to be flexible, allowing you to shape your degree to reflect your interests and strengths. Modules span music performance, composition, musicology, film history, film theory, and practical filmmaking across three levels of study.
Melody and Harmony
20 creditsDevelops fundamental skills in analysing music from the common practice era onwards, including elements of modern popular music. Focuses on building confidence in harmonic and melodic identification and construction, including diatonicism, chromaticism, and chord progressions.
Introduction to Film Studies
20 creditsProvides a foundational understanding of the film industry, history, and theory. You will learn about film-making techniques and develop critical analytical skills for studying cinema from multiple perspectives.
Solo Performance
20 creditsAn optional module taught through an innovative combination of individual tuition, workshops, and masterclasses. You will enhance your solo and ensemble performance skills under the guidance of experienced performers.
Film Production and Practice
20 creditsCombines critical and creative work, giving you hands-on experience with filmmaking equipment and editing suites. You will develop skills in taking a piece of work from initial concept through to completion.
Music Research Skills
20 creditsDevelops your confidence in undertaking research into a musical topic of your choice and writing your findings in the form of an extended essay. Introduces conventions and methods of musicological research and presentation.
Creative Practice Dissertation
40 creditsA final-year module involving the production of a piece of practice-based research such as a fiction or non-fiction television, film, performance, or radio piece. Students are assisted via workshops and individual supervisions in devising, refining, and presenting their work.

Admission Requirements

- A-Level RequirementsIncluding a grade B in Music. In lieu of Music A-level, other A-level subjects may be considered in conjunction with other level 3 qualifications in Music.
- Alternative Music QualificationsMerit in ABRSM/Trinity/LCM/Rockschool Grade 5 Theory or Grade 7 Practical, or IB Higher in Music may be accepted.

- International QualificationsA school-leaving qualification equivalent to British A-levels or International Baccalaureate is required. Country-specific requirements apply.
