Program Overview: Modern Languages and Cymraeg (Welsh)
This joint-honours degree provides an exciting opportunity to learn about languages, culture, and history in both a Welsh and international context. You can combine the study of Welsh (Cymraeg) with a modern language — choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish — at either beginners or advanced level.
Half your taught modules in each year will focus on modern languages and the other half on Welsh studies. Within the Cymraeg component, you will explore Welsh culture, history, literature, and poetry from the medieval Mabinogion to contemporary works, while language modules prepare you to thrive in a bilingual and multilingual environment.
All modern language modules include written skills such as translation and essay writing, alongside oral skills taught by native speakers. Optional modules allow you to gain insight into the cinema, literature, history, and culture of the country whose language you are studying, giving you a truly immersive academic experience.

Curriculum and Modules
The curriculum is split equally between Modern Languages and Cymraeg (Welsh) each year. You will develop advanced written and oral language competencies alongside deep cultural and literary knowledge, culminating in a dissertation in your final year. Assessment involves coursework, written and oral examinations, essays, and oral presentations.
Develop advanced translation, essay writing, and oral communication skills in your chosen modern language, taught by native speakers in small-group settings.
