Linguistics and English Language
Program Overview: Linguistics and the English Language BA (Hons)
On this Linguistics and the English Language degree, you will learn about, understand, and interpret many aspects of human language. The program provides a strong foundational background and important scientific insight into the nature, structure, and use of language, as well as the history of English and sociolinguistics.
The English language component gives you the opportunity to study the grammatical structure of English, how meaning is made and interpreted across discourses, how sounds are formed and understood, and how language use varies across speakers and changes over time. You will also explore the development of English dialects, World Englishes, and the role of English as a global lingua franca.
The linguistic elements of the degree cover the science behind language, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics. Bangor's Linguistics department has been teaching the subject since the 1960s, making it one of the longest-established linguistics departments in the UK.
