The Learning Disability Nursing BN (Hons) at Bangor University prepares you to become a professional, caring, and competent nurse validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This program focuses on the value and rights of the person, effective communication, person-centred practice, and evidence-based approaches to improve the health and well-being of people with a learning disability.
When studying to be a learning disability nurse, you will spend half of your time at the university and the other half on clinical placements. Whilst on placement you will work with people with a learning disability, supported by learning disability nurses and other members of the multi-disciplinary team across both community and residential settings.
The program blends wide-ranging clinical placements with research-based theory and supported clinical skills training featuring virtual reality technologies and high-fidelity simulation. Bangor University's newly refurbished clinical skills facilities include a two-bed High Fidelity suite, a seven-bay ward, and additional flexible clinical skills areas that provide a simulated environment to prepare you for real-world practice.

Curriculum and Modules
The Learning Disability Nursing BN (Hons) curriculum is structured across three years, combining theoretical learning with extensive clinical practice. Modules are designed to build your knowledge progressively, from foundational nursing skills to specialist learning disability practice. Covers health needs across the lifespan including epidemiology, biological determinants of health, nutrition, oral care, and end-of-life care. Explores the nature of learning disabilities including genomics, causation, specific syndromes, and key clinical practice skills.
Develops skills and knowledge in person-centred assessment within learning disability nursing. Covers systematic approaches to nursing, the therapeutic relationship, the Mental Capacity Act, and multi-disciplinary working.
Focuses on professional, legal, and ethical requirements for learning disability nursing practice. Develops effective communication skills and builds understanding of person-centred thinking and therapeutic approaches.
Equips students with skills to identify, select, and analyse appropriate evidence to support clinical decision-making. Covers research methodologies, clinical supervision, and reflective practice in learning disability nursing contexts.
Provides supervised clinical experience across diverse healthcare settings including community teams, residential services, and specialist facilities. Students work with children and adults with learning disabilities under the guidance of practice supervisors and assessors.
