Mathematics Program Overview

The Mathematics program at Manhattan University provides rigorous training in analysis, linear and abstract algebra, statistics, and mathematical proof-writing. Students develop the ability to break complex problems into manageable components and apply techniques across disciplines, preparing them for careers in data science, finance, education, law, and more.

Housed within the Kakos School of Arts and Sciences, the program offers both B.S. and B.A. degree paths. The B.S. path prepares students for graduate studies in mathematics or careers in data science and systems engineering, while the B.A. path offers a more liberal arts-oriented core suited to fields such as STEM education, technical writing, and economics.

Small class sizes foster collaborative problem solving and close faculty-student relationships. Students are encouraged to participate in funded research projects with faculty mentors and have presented their work at national and international conferences, with several co-authoring peer-reviewed publications.

Program Highlights

  • Funded undergraduate research opportunities with distinguished faculty mentors who are award-winning educators
  • Small class sizes that foster collaborative problem solving and strong student-faculty connections
  • Participation in national competitions including the Putnam Exam and the Mathematical Modeling Contest
  • Alumni employment pathways at companies including Microsoft, Deloitte, Berkshire Hathaway, and ConEd

Curriculum and Modules

The mathematics curriculum begins with calculus classes enhanced by MAPLE, the computer algebra system, and builds depth through courses in algebra and analysis. The program features yearlong sequences in Linear and Abstract Algebra, along with a wealth of upper division electives in pure and applied mathematics.

Calculus I

3 Credits

Foundations of differential and integral calculus including limits, derivatives, and integrals of functions of one variable. Students develop essential computational and analytical skills for advanced mathematics.

Calculus II

3 Credits

Continuation of Calculus I covering techniques of integration, sequences, series, and applications. Builds the mathematical maturity needed for multivariable calculus and analysis.

Calculus III (Multivariable Calculus)

3 Credits

Extension of calculus to functions of several variables, including partial derivatives, multiple integrals, and vector calculus. Essential preparation for advanced courses in analysis and applied mathematics.

Linear Algebra I

3 Credits

Study of vector spaces, linear transformations, matrices, determinants, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Provides foundational tools used across pure and applied mathematics.

Abstract Algebra

3 Credits

Introduction to algebraic structures including groups, rings, and fields. Emphasizes rigorous proof-writing and abstract mathematical reasoning.

Senior Seminar in Mathematics

3 Credits

Capstone experience integrating knowledge from across the mathematics curriculum. Students engage in independent research or advanced study and present their findings.
