Program Overview: B.S. in Computer Science at Manhattan University
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Manhattan University teaches you how to analyze problems, design algorithmic solutions, and implement them using industry-standard programming languages such as C++ and Java. Located on a 23-acre campus in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx, just 35 minutes from midtown Manhattan by subway, you benefit from proximity to one of the largest technology job markets in the United States.
The program is housed within the Kakos School of Science and combines rigorous computer science theory with hands-on software design projects and an engaging senior capstone experience. You will study under expert faculty who are widely published and active in professional associations such as the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Manhattan University also offers specialized concentrations in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning as well as Cybersecurity within the B.S. degree, allowing you to tailor your studies to emerging industry demands. Graduates are well prepared for careers in technology or for advanced study, with a special one-year pathway available to continue directly into the M.S. in Computer Science program.
Key Program Highlights
- ABET-accredited program ensuring your degree meets nationally recognized standards for computing education
- Concentrations available in AI and Machine Learning or Cybersecurity within the B.S. degree
- Small class sizes with personalized faculty mentorship and hands-on research opportunities leading to publications
- Accelerated B.S./M.S. pathway allowing you to earn a master's degree in just one additional year
Curriculum and Course Modules
The B.S. in Computer Science curriculum balances foundational computer science theory with practical programming skills and a strong liberal arts core. You will progress from introductory programming through advanced topics in algorithms, systems, and applied computing, culminating in a senior capstone design project.
Computer Science I (CMPT 101)
3 CreditsAn introduction to basic programming concepts and problem-solving skills using the C++ language. Topics include flow of control, loops, functions, arrays, strings, and files.
Computer Science II (CMPT 102)
3 CreditsAn introduction to advanced programming concepts using C++. Topics include pointers, structured data, classes, inheritance, polymorphism, exceptions, templates, and recursion.
Data Structures (CMPT 238/239)
3 CreditsStudy of fundamental data structures and algorithms used in software development. Students strengthen problem-solving techniques and deepen their understanding of efficient data organization.
Design and Analysis of Algorithms
3 CreditsA rigorous study of algorithm design paradigms and complexity analysis. Students learn to evaluate algorithmic efficiency and apply techniques to solve computational problems.
Operating Systems
3 CreditsCovers the principles of modern operating systems including process management, memory management, file systems, and concurrency. Students gain practical experience with system-level programming.
Software Engineering (CMPT 456)
3 CreditsA study of the principles and methods for developing large and complex software systems. Each student participates in a team project devoted to the specification, design, and implementation of a sizable software system.
