Program Overview: Welding and Fabrication Technician
The Welding and Fabrication Technician diploma at Conestoga College is a comprehensive two-year program that covers all theoretical and practical learning outcomes for Levels 1 and 2 of both the Metal Fabricator-Fitter (437A) and the Welder (456A) apprenticeship programs in Ontario. You will learn to follow metal fabrication projects from the computer-aided engineering drawing (CAD) stage through to cutting, forming, fitting, welding, and inspection of fabrications.
Students use both conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) fabrication equipment programmed with computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software. You will also develop highly sought-after welding skills using modern equipment for common arc welding processes such as SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW, and GTAW (TIG).
Graduates may choose to enter the workforce and pursue further apprenticeship training, or they may be eligible to continue their studies with advanced standing in programs such as Manufacturing Engineering Technology - Welding and Robotics, or Welding Engineering Technology Inspection. With additional work experience and testing, graduates may also earn certification with the Canadian Welding Bureau as a welding inspector or welding supervisor.

Curriculum and Modules
The Welding and Fabrication Technician program delivers a balanced mix of hands-on welding practice, metal fabrication techniques, engineering drawing interpretation, and workplace safety training. Courses progress from foundational skills in the first year to advanced welding processes and mechanized equipment operation in the second year.
Welding Fundamentals (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW)
CoreIntroduces students to the setup and safe operation of foundational arc welding processes including Shielded Metal Arc Welding (stick), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), and Flux Cored Arc Welding on various joint configurations and positions.
Metal Fabrication Operations
CoreCovers measuring, layout, cutting, forming, and fitting for weldment manufacturing using industrial metal fabrication machinery including CNC profile cutting machines, plate rolls, shears, iron-workers, and press brakes.
Technical Drawing and Blueprint Reading
CoreIntroduces basic principles of technical drawings including orthographic projections, sections, dimensioning and tolerancing, notes, specifications, and welding symbols for interpreting welded fabrication engineering drawings.
Advanced Welding Processes (GTAW, SAW, Mechanized Welding)
CoreProvides hands-on experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Submerged Arc Welding, resistance spot welding, and pulsed GMAW/GTAW processes, as well as operation of mechanized welding equipment such as travel carriages, rotators, and manipulators.
Welding Codes, Standards, and Inspection
CoreDevelops familiarity with common welding codes and standards in the industry, including ASME and CSA standards, and prepares welding documentation for quality assurance and inspection purposes.
Workplace Health and Safety
CoreCovers the setup and safe operation of welding and fabricating processes and equipment, including Health and Safety legislation, lock-out procedures, hazard control, personal protective equipment, and WHMIS requirements.

Applicants to the Welding and Fabrication Technician program must meet academic and language proficiency requirements.
