The Food Processing Technician (Optional Co-op) program at Conestoga College prepares you for a rewarding career in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. Delivered at the Institute of Food Processing Technology (IFPT) on the Cambridge campus, this diploma program covers industrial maintenance, machine technology, food science, food safety, and the principles of food manufacturing.

You will train in IFPT's one-of-a-kind semi-industrial lab facility, the only facility of its kind in Canada, gaining intensive hands-on experience with industrial food processing equipment. The curriculum spans courses on drawings and schematics, pumps, valves, motor controls, PLCs, and food processing methods, all supported by practical work in mechanical shops and a food processing pilot plant.

Eligible students can apply for an optional co-operative education work term during their third term of study, gaining valuable real-world industry experience. Graduates are well-prepared for positions in food and beverage manufacturing, equipped to support the operation, maintenance, and sanitation of equipment to ensure the production of high-quality, safe food products.

Curriculum & Course Modules

The Food Processing Technician program is structured across four academic terms, combining theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on laboratory and workshop experience. You will develop competencies in both mechanical systems and food manufacturing processes, preparing you for a versatile career in the industry.

Industrial Maintenance & Machine Technology

Covers the fundamentals of industrial maintenance procedures including predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance practices. You will learn to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain machinery commonly found in food manufacturing environments.

Drawings, Schematics & Technical Documentation

Develops your ability to interpret and create technical documentation used in food manufacturing, including SOPs, SSOPs, preventive maintenance schedules, batch records, and job instruction sheets.

Pumps, Valves, Motor Controls & PLCs

Provides training in the mechanical and electrical components critical to food processing operations. Topics include pump and valve systems, motor control circuits, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Introduction to Food Science & Processing Methods

Introduces the scientific principles behind food production, preservation, and processing techniques. You will explore thermal processing, fermentation, dehydration, and other key methods used in modern food manufacturing.

Food Safety & Sanitation Practices

Focuses on health and safety regulations, food safety standards, and sanitation procedures essential to food manufacturing operations. You will learn HACCP principles and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Food Manufacturing Principles & Equipment Operation

Provides a comprehensive overview of food manufacturing operations, including equipment operation, production line management, and quality control processes in a simulated industrial environment.
