The Design Foundations program at Conestoga College is an intensive one-year Ontario College Certificate designed for students interested in exploring a career in applied design and communications. Curriculum & Modules
The Design Foundations curriculum is structured across two semesters and emphasizes hands-on, studio-based learning. Students explore a broad range of design disciplines, building foundational skills that prepare them for specialization in advanced programs. The program covers essential topics from drawing and colour theory to digital production and design history.
Explore the principles of two-dimensional design including composition, layout, visual hierarchy, and design elements. Students apply these principles through studio projects using various media.
Develop an understanding of three-dimensional form, space, and structure. Students create physical models and sculptures while learning about materials, volume, and spatial relationships.
Build core observational drawing skills through still life, figure drawing, and life drawing sessions. Emphasis is placed on proportion, perspective, shading, and expressive mark-making techniques.
Study the science and application of colour in design, including colour relationships, palettes, psychological effects, and practical use in both traditional and digital media.
Gain hands-on experience with industry-standard digital design software and tools. Students learn digital illustration, image manipulation, and file preparation for professional output.
