Conestoga College's Construction Techniques (Carpentry) program is a hands-on, two-semester certificate designed to equip you with essential carpentry skills for interior and exterior construction in both residential and commercial settings. You will train with hand and power tools while working on real-world projects at Conestoga's dedicated Skilled Trades Campus in the Kitchener-Waterloo region of Ontario, Canada.
The program builds employment-ready knowledge in blueprint reading, job site safety, estimating, and industry standards, preparing you for entry-level employment in the construction industry. With a strong emphasis on safety training, both general and trade-specific, you will develop practical competencies that align with current industry requirements and the Ontario Building Code.
Upon completion, graduates may qualify for an exemption from Level 1 in-school training for the 403A General Carpenter apprenticeship. You also have the option to continue your education by entering directly into the second year of Conestoga's Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma program, creating a clear pathway for career advancement.

Curriculum & Course Modules
The Construction Techniques (Carpentry) program is delivered over two semesters and combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on workshop practice. Courses cover the full spectrum of carpentry fundamentals, from trade history and safety protocols to advanced framing and finishing techniques, ensuring you graduate with job-ready skills.
Students are introduced to the carpentry trade through its history, origins, and background. The course covers methods and materials used in the construction of forms for footings, flatwork, low-rise foundation walls, and framing, along with quality and craftsmanship standards.
This module focuses on general and trade-specific safety training, including WHMIS, working at heights certification, and compliance with Ontario health and safety regulations. Students learn to identify hazards and implement safe practices on construction sites.
Students develop the ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, floor plans, and technical drawings. The course also introduces material estimation and quantity takeoff methods used in residential and light-commercial projects.
This hands-on module covers the construction of floor systems, wall framing, ceiling joists, and roof structures for residential buildings. Students practice layout, cutting, and assembly techniques using industry-standard tools and materials.
Students learn finishing techniques for both interior and exterior applications, including drywall installation, trim work, siding, and roofing. Emphasis is placed on precision, quality standards, and adherence to building codes.
